
The BBC Trust has confirmed that DAB and Internet station BBC 6 Music will remain intact, although sister station Asian Network is likely to be closed.
6 Music’s “highly distinctive” service was said to represent “value for money”. The Trust also agreed that 6 Music does not threaten commercial competitors “so long as it remains true to its distinctive remit”. A consultation on the BBC’s future received approximately 39,000 online responses about the station, the vast majority of which opposed its closure.
The station received a huge bump in listeners and general awareness since its proposed closure as part of the BBC Strategy Review in early March this year. Its listener base has grown 50% from this time last year.
