2012: The year of the music app

The BBC 6 Music website features an article by Sinead Garvan which looks at how the music industry might be effected by music technology in 2012.

This ties in with the questions we were asking in last years industry poll, Ten in Ten, whereby we asked 1,600+ music industry professionals for their views about the futures on our industry – with someĀ intriguingĀ results.

Stuart Dredge, technology journalist for the Guardian believes artists in 2012 could lead the way when it comes to developing more products: “I think we’re going to see more and more artists following in Bjork’s footsteps and releasing their albums as apps. They might not spend quite as much money on it as Bjork because it’s very ambitious but i think they will do things along the same lines.”

So, while people might still be unsure about how much they should pay for content, what we listen to music on and through, still seems to be something we are willing to invest in.

“Spotify has just anounced it’s apps platform and I think a lot of people will be building stuff on top of Spotify that will make it more interesting.” Dredge continued.

It looks as though 2012 will become the year of the music apps, as more and more tech start ups are opening their technology to 3rd party developers and giants like Google are looking to dominate this booming market place.
